Counting to 10: A Simple Technique to Manage Anger

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s normal to feel stressed or angry from time to time. But how we deal with those feelings can make a big difference in how we feel and how we interact with others. That’s why we want to introduce you to a simple technique that can help you manage your anger: counting to 10.

Imagine this scenario: You’re in a situation that’s making you feel angry or frustrated. Instead of letting those feelings take over, you can take control by following these easy steps:

  • Pause: When you start to feel angry, pause whatever you’re doing or saying. This gives you a chance to step back from the situation and take a deep breath.
  • Breathe: Close your eyes if it helps, and take slow, deep breaths. Focus on your breath entering and leaving your body. This helps to calm your mind and body.
  • Count: As you breathe, start counting slowly from one to ten. You can count in your head or whisper the numbers quietly to yourself. This gives your mind something else to focus on and helps to distract you from your anger.
  • Reflect: While you’re counting, take a moment to think about why you’re feeling angry. Is it because someone said or did something that upset you? Understanding the source of your anger can help you figure out how to deal with it.
  • Choose: Once you’ve reached ten, it’s time to make a choice about how you want to respond. Instead of reacting impulsively out of anger, think about how you can respond calmly and rationally. This might mean walking away from the situation, talking to someone about how you’re feeling, or finding a way to solve the problem peacefully.

This initiative is brought to you by Rotary Club Plovdiv International (https://rcpi.bg/), and its secretary Karel Van Isacker presented it on 19 April 2024 to the students and teachers of Ellin Pellin School in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. By using the counting to 10 technique, you can take control of your anger and respond to stressful situations in a positive and constructive way.

So next time you’re feeling angry, remember to pause, breathe, count, reflect, and choose. You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel!
