Keeping a city clean does not depend only on municipal services. It also depends on thousands of small decisions made every day by the people who live, work, study and spend their free time there. This is the idea behind Your Actions Matter, a community initiative launched by Rotary Club Plovdiv International to encourage greater personal responsibility for Plovdiv’s shared environment.

Plovdiv is one of Europe’s oldest cities and attracts residents and visitors with its historic architecture, parks, cultural heritage and distinctive urban landscape. Yet, like many cities, it faces a very visible problem: everyday litter. Plastic bottles, cans, food packaging, cigarette ends and other small items left behind gradually affect streets, parks, historic areas and natural spaces.
The campaign starts from a deliberately simple principle: small actions can have a big impact.
Rather than presenting environmental responsibility as something abstract, Your Actions Matter focuses on practical behaviour that almost everyone can adopt. Putting rubbish in the appropriate bin, not leaving bottles or packaging in nature, picking up a piece of litter when possible, participating in community clean-ups and encouraging others to behave responsibly are individually modest actions. Repeated by thousands of people, however, they can make a measurable difference to the appearance and quality of a city.
Young people at the centre
A particularly important part of the initiative is the involvement of schools and young people.
Students will be encouraged to participate through workshops, poster and video competitions, school challenges and clean-up activities. The objective goes beyond simply asking young people not to litter. The campaign seeks to develop environmental responsibility and demonstrate that individual behaviour influences the wider community.
Young people can also act as multipliers. A student who becomes more conscious about littering can influence classmates, friends and family members. In this way, environmental awareness can spread from the classroom into households and neighbourhoods.
The campaign therefore combines education with action: participants do not merely learn about environmental responsibility but are encouraged to practise it.
Bringing the community together
Your Actions Matter is also intended as a platform for wider civic participation.
Local businesses, schools, organisations and institutions are invited to become partners. Their contribution can take different forms, including sponsoring campaign materials, providing information points, supporting activities, offering small incentives or helping communicate the campaign message.
Public clean-up events and information activities will provide additional opportunities for citizens to participate directly.
This community dimension is important because litter is ultimately a shared problem. Municipal authorities can provide bins, street cleaning and waste-management infrastructure, but maintaining clean public spaces also requires responsible behaviour from the people using them.
The campaign therefore does not ask who is solely responsible for keeping Plovdiv clean. Instead, it asks a more practical question: what can each of us do?
From awareness to habit
The longer-term ambition is to turn awareness into everyday behaviour.
Environmental campaigns can organise individual clean-up days, but lasting improvement requires something more fundamental: fewer people dropping litter in the first place. Prevention is therefore just as important as cleaning.
A person putting a bottle in a bin may appear insignificant. So does somebody picking up a discarded wrapper, reminding a friend not to leave rubbish behind or teaching a child to respect a public park.
But cities are shaped by repeated behaviour.
When responsible actions become normal rather than exceptional, cleaner streets and public spaces become easier to maintain. At the same time, visible care for the urban environment can strengthen community pride and encourage others to behave similarly.
This is precisely the cultural change that Your Actions Matter seeks to encourage.
A shared responsibility for Plovdiv
The initiative has set out several straightforward ambitions: reducing litter in public spaces, increasing environmental awareness among young people, strengthening community pride and contributing to cleaner streets, parks and historic areas.
None requires extraordinary action from individual citizens.
That is arguably the campaign’s most important message. Improving our surroundings does not always begin with large projects or major investments. Sometimes it begins with changing what we do with the bottle in our hand, the wrapper we see on the pavement or the public space we use every day.
Residents, schools, businesses and organisations can all contribute in different ways.
One action may seem small. Thousands of actions are not.
Small actions. Big impact. Your actions matter.
